ABOUT FORT MOORE

Fort Moore, located in western Georgia near the Alabama border, is one of the largest military installations in the United States. It covers over 182,000 acres and plays host to approximately 120,000 active-duty soldiers, civilians, and their families.

Once called Fort Benning until the historic name change in 2023, Fort Moore was established in 1918 and has a rich history of preparing soldiers for combat, from World War I to modern conflicts. Today, it’s home to the U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence, best known for its advanced training programs, including leadership development, combat readiness, and airborne and ranger training.

Despite its reputation as a training powerhouse, Fort Moore maintains a strong sense of community, with programs and resources aimed at supporting military families and easing transitions during relocations. MOVING TO FORT MOORE

To support its expansive training programs and its population of military servicemen, their families, and other staff, Fort Moore offers a variety of housing options both on- and off-base. Understanding the basics of military relocation can help make your transition smoother, so you can focus on getting settled and thriving in your new home.

On-post housing at Fort Moore

Fort Moore has over 4,000 housing units available on-base. A vast majority of these properties are located right at Fort Moore, while the small remainder (77 units) are in Camp Merrill, a Fort More/Fort Benning sub-installation in Dahlonega, approximately three hours away.

The Villages of Fort Moore is Fort Moore’s on-post housing community, offering a range of homes tailored to different ranks and family sizes. The community is composed of seven villages and ten neighborhoods, each with their own eligibility requirements. Some of the notable villages include:

  • Custer Village, a neighborhood of renovated and new construction townhomes, duplexes, cottages, and single-family residences, some of which are available in accessible floor plans. (Eligibility: E1-E5, E6-E8, E9, O1, O1E, O2-O3, O4, O5-O6, Single Soldier)

  • Upatoi Village, which features larger single-family homes that offer three to four bedrooms, two-car garages, and independent backyard spaces. Upatoi Village is ideally located near the National Infantry Museum. (Eligibility: E9, O4, O5-O6)

  • East Main Post, located in the center of Fort Moore. Divided into several smaller subdivisions, the village features a variety of housing options, such as condos, single-family homes, and duplexes. East Main Post is also the site of four historic Fort Moore homes. (Eligibility: E1-E5, E6-E8, E9, O1, O1E, O2-O3, O4, O5-O6, Single Soldier, Other Eligible Tenants)

  • McGraw Village, which caters to families with both larger homes and easy access to parks and playgrounds, making it an attractive option for those with young children. Homes available here include duplexes and single-family homes. (Eligibility: E6-E8)

  • Porter Village at Camp Merrill, where there are 77 single-family units that are available in different floor plans. Porter Village has its own suite of amenities, including a basketball court and community swimming pool. (Eligibility: E1-E5, E6-E8, E9, O1, O1E, O2-O3, O4, O5-O6, Other Eligible Tenants)

Although different floor plans are available, housing at The Villages in Fort Moore typically have the following features and amenities:

Rent at The Villages in Fort Moore is inclusive of gas, electricity, and water allowance. Tenants may qualify for energy rebates based on their household’s utility consumption.

Off-post housing near Fort Moore

For those considering off-post housing near Fort Moore, there are several attractive options in nearby communities that cater to different needs and preferences. The most popular areas tend to be close to base, offering convenience, affordability, and a range of housing styles.

  1. Columbus, GA

    Columbus is often the go-to destination for soldiers and military personnel stationed at Fort Moore. Located approximately 20 minutes north of Fort Moore, the city is known for its strong military heritage and the National Infantry Museum. The city is filled with amenities, including Peachtree Mall and The Landings for shopping and entertainment.

    A wide variety of off-post real estate can be found in Columbus, such as single-family homes, condos, townhomes, as well as luxury properties. Notable neighborhoods in the city include Sand Hill, Green Island Hills, Midland, Flat Rock, and Battle Park.

  1. Orders and paperwork: Once you receive your PCS orders, you’ll want to initiate the relocation process right away. This includes scheduling transportation of your household goods through the Defense Personal Property System (DPS). You’ll need to complete necessary paperwork for your travel, dependents, and housing needs as early as possible.

  2. Temporary lodging: If you arrive before your permanent housing is ready, Fort Moore has temporary lodging options available. It’s a good idea to make reservations at the IHG Army Hotels on base or look into nearby accommodations if availability is limited, especially during peak PCS seasons.

  3. On-base housing: You can apply for on-post housing through The Villages of Fort Moore before your move. Be sure to provide a copy of your PCS orders and fill out the required application. Housing is assigned based on rank and family size, and wait times can vary depending on availability. If you’re interested in living off base, it’s wise to research rental or purchasing options in nearby communities like Columbus or Phenix City.

  4. In-processing: Upon arrival, every soldier must report to the Soldier for Life Center for in-processing. This includes medical screenings, personnel actions, and financial processing to ensure you’re fully integrated into the Fort Moore system.

  5. Family services: Fort Moore offers an array of services to help families settle in, including child care, spouse employment programs, and schools on base. The Army Community Service (ACS) also provides relocation readiness assistance to make the transition easier, particularly for first-time movers or families with unique needs.

Although there are no high schools located within Fort Moore, teenage schoolchildren can go to any of the following schools nearby, such as Spencer High School in Columbus, Chattahoochee County High School in Cusseta, and Russell County High School in Seale, Alabama.

Getting in and around Fort Moore

  • Within the base, there is a shuttle service that runs through key areas like Sand Hill, Kelley Hill, and the main post facilities, making it easy to navigate the installation without needing a personal vehicle. Shuttle stops are clearly marked and conveniently located near popular destinations such as the Warrior Training Center and Abrams Hall.

  • For those traveling off post, Fort Moore is well connected by major highways, including I-185, US-27, and US-80, providing easy access to nearby cities like Columbus and Phenix City. Public transportation is also available through the METRA Transit System, which services Columbus and offers routes that connect to Fort Moore. Additionally, Greyhound bus services are available in the area for intercity travel.

  • For longer trips, the nearest airports include Columbus Metropolitan Airport (CSG), located just a short drive from Fort Moore, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), which is about 90 minutes away. Shuttle services, such as Groome Transportation, offer regular trips between Fort Moore and Atlanta’s airport, making travel more convenient for those without personal vehicles.
